Friendship is Magic is the latest animation, and follows a young pony, Twilight Sparkle, who is reluctantly sent to Ponyville after her mentor, Princess Celestia, claims “that there is more to a young pony’s life than studying”.
Twilight Sparkle is sent on a quest to make friends and find her place. Twilight Sparkle and her pet, Spike, is met by 5 ponies who together with Spike and Twilight, make out the main characters of the series.
Each represents a different facet of friendship, and Twilight discovers herself to be a key part of the magical artifacts known as the “Elements of Harmony”.
The ponies travel on adventures and help others around Equestria while working out problems that arise in their own friendships.
Main Characters:
Princess Celestia
Occupation: Teacher, Ruler of Equestria
Colours: White, or light purple, with blue, green, pink and purple hair and tail. She has a gold necklace and hooves. The sun on her hind leg is yellow and orange.
In the first episode of Friendship is magic, we learn of Princess Celestia and her sister Princess Luna. They are in charge of night and day. Princess Luna is jealous of the day, because the ponies play and bask in the sun, while they only sleep in her beautiful night. She grows mad with power and refuses to let the moon down. Princess Celestia banishes her sister to live inside the moon, and becomes the sole ruler of Equestria. Princess Luna becomes the Mare in the Moon, and after escaping her name changes to Nightmare Moon.
Twilight Sparkle
Occupation: Ruler of the Friendship Rainbow Kingdom
Element: Magic
Colours: Purple, with dark blue, purple and pink stripes in her tail.
Twilight Sparkle studies very hard and comes upon a legend that states that Princess Luna will break free from the moon and plunge Equestria into eternal darkness. Princess Celestia sends her to Ponyville to make friends. Twilight Sparkle wants nothing more but to get to the library to study the legends further and stop Princess Luna, she does not believe that “making friends” will save the world. We later learn that Friendship (Harmony) is the most important tool in saving Equestra from Princess Luna.
Spike
Occupation: Twilight Sparkle’s best friend and assistant.
He has the ability to deliver scrolls to and from Princess Celestia via his green fire breath.Spike is a baby dragon and the best friend of Twilight Sparkle. He keeps her grounded and tells her when he thinks her plans dangerous/bad. Spike also has a crush on Rarity.
Pinkie Pie
Occupation: Writer/Singer Works at Sugarcube Corner
Element: Laughter
Colours: Light pink, with dark pink hair and two blue and one yellow balloon on her hind leg.
Pet: Gummy, toothless baby alligator
Pinkie is energetic and sociable. She lives on the bakery’s second floor with Gummy, her pet toothless baby alligator.
Applejack
Occupation: Lives and works at Sweet Apple Acres
Element: Honesty
Colours: Orange, with yellow mane and tale. The apples on her hind leg are red.
Pet: Winona, dog
Applejack is a brave, reliable, strong, mature, and hard-working pony, although headstrong about doing things on her own
Rainbow Dash
Occupation: Maintains the weather and clears the skies, best flier in all of Equestra
Element: Loyalty
Colours: Light blue, with a red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple mane and tale. She has a white cloud and rainbow on her hind leg.
Pet: Tank, Tortoise
Rainbow Dash is a female Pegasus pony.. As a huge fan of the Wonderbolts, she becomes a reservist member of the elite flying group. Rarity and Princess Celestia both declare that she is the best flier in all of Equestria. Rainbow Dash has a pet tortoise named Tank, whom she chooses out of Fluttershy’s offered animals.

Occupation: Shop owner, seamstress, fashion designer
Element: Generosity
Colours: Grey, with a purple main and tale. She has light blue diamonds on her hind leg and wears light blue eye-shadow.
Pet: Opalescence (Opal for short), Cat
Female unicorn pony and Spike’s (Twilight Sparkle’s assistant) crush.
Fluttershy
Occupation: Animal caretaker, Part-time Pony Times singer
Element: Kindness
Pet: Angel, Bunny
Fluttershy is a female Pegasus pony. She lives in a small cottage near the Everfree Forest and takes care of animals, the most prominent of her charges being Angel the bunny.
Other characters from the series:
Other characters in the series include Princess Luna who Later becomes Nightmare Moon, the sister of Princess Celestia and is one of the antagonists in the animation series. Sweetie Belle, is a school-age unicorn pony and Rarity’s younger sister.
Sweetie Belle and her friends, Apple Bloom, a female school-age Earth pony and a member of the Apple family, and Scootaloo, a female school-age Pegasus pony who is a talented scooter driver, form the Cutie Mark Crusaders, a club/”secret society”, devoted to helping ponies earn their cutie marks.
Big Macintosh is the older brother of Applejack and Applebloom. A soft spoken male Earth pony, and Derpy Hooves, also known as Derpy, Muffins and Ditzy Doo, who doesn’t have any speaking roles in the animation, and plays a “Where’s Waldo” type cameo.
The ponies all live together in Ponyville. In the first few episodes of the series, Friendship is Magic, the ponies meet Twilight Sparkle and Spike in turn. A My Little Pony movie will be released in theatres in October 2017
